You found a Reel, copied the link, pasted it into a downloader — and something went wrong. Maybe you got an error message. Maybe nothing happened. Maybe you got a file that doesn’t play.
Instagram downloader errors usually fall into a small number of categories, and most have straightforward fixes. This guide covers all of them.
Fix 1: Check That You Copied the Right Link
This is the most common cause of errors, and it’s easy to overlook because all Instagram URLs look similar at a glance.
The link must be from the specific Reel — not the profile page.
A Reel-specific URL looks like this:
https://www.instagram.com/reel/XXXXXXXXXX/
Links that won’t work:
https://www.instagram.com/username/(profile page)https://www.instagram.com/p/XXXXXXXXXX/(photo post, not a Reel)https://www.instagram.com/stories/username/(Story, not a Reel)
How to get the correct link:
- Open the Reel in the Instagram app
- Tap the three-dot menu (⋯) at the bottom right of the Reel
- Tap “Copy Link”
That’s the only reliable way to copy a Reel-specific URL. Don’t copy from the address bar in a browser — Instagram’s mobile site sometimes shows a different URL format that some tools don’t recognize.
Fix 2: The Account Is Private
Instagram downloader tools can only access content from public Instagram accounts. Private account content is restricted to that account’s approved followers, and third-party tools respect those privacy settings.
If you’re trying to download a Reel from a private account:
- You cannot use any third-party downloader tool to access it
- Screen recording is the only workaround (with significant quality trade-offs)
- Any tool claiming to download private account content either doesn’t work or asks for your login credentials — both are red flags
There’s no workaround here. Instagram’s private account protection is enforced at the server level.
Fix 3: The Reel Was Deleted
If a creator deletes a Reel after you found it and copied the link, the link is no longer valid. Instagram’s servers no longer have that file.
Signs this is the issue:
- You get a “content not available” error even when you try to view the Reel directly on Instagram
- The Reel’s URL returns a 404 or “Page not found” error
There’s no way to download a deleted Reel — the file doesn’t exist on Instagram’s servers anymore. No tool can retrieve content that’s been removed.
Fix 4: Try a Different Browser
Browser-specific issues cause download problems more often than people realize, especially on mobile.
On iPhone: Chrome on iOS sometimes handles video downloads poorly — it may open the video in a new tab instead of giving you a save option. Switch to Safari, which handles the “long-press → Save to Photos” workflow most reliably on iOS.
On Android: Both Chrome and Samsung Internet work for most downloads. If one isn’t working, try the other.
On desktop: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari all work. If one browser is blocking the download or showing an error, try another before assuming the tool is broken.
Also try: Disabling browser extensions temporarily. Ad blockers, privacy extensions (like uBlock Origin), and download managers can interfere with how a downloader tool fetches and serves the video file. Disable extensions and try again.
Fix 5: Clear Your Browser Cache and Cookies
A corrupted cache can cause persistent errors on a page even after the underlying issue is resolved.
On Chrome (desktop):
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Delete(Windows) orCmd + Shift + Delete(Mac) - Select “All time” as the time range
- Check “Cached images and files” and “Cookies and other site data”
- Click “Clear data”
- Reload the page and try again
On Safari (iPhone):
- Settings → Safari → “Clear History and Website Data”
- Reload reelclick.online and try again
On Chrome (Android):
- Three-dot menu → Settings → Privacy and security → “Clear browsing data”
- Select cache and cookies → Clear
Fix 6: The Link Contains Extra Parameters
When you copy an Instagram link from a browser (rather than the app), it sometimes includes tracking parameters like ?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link or ?igsh=... at the end.
Some downloader tools handle these automatically, but if you’re getting errors, try removing everything after the ? in the URL before pasting.
Example:
- Full URL:
https://www.instagram.com/reel/XXXXXXXXXX/?igsh=abc123xyz - Clean URL:
https://www.instagram.com/reel/XXXXXXXXXX/
Paste just the clean URL and try downloading again.
Fix 7: Instagram Is Temporarily Limiting Access
Instagram periodically rate-limits or temporarily blocks access to content from specific IP addresses — this is more common if you’re using a VPN or if the server the tool uses is under heavy load.
Signs this is happening:
- You get an error like “Could not fetch this content” even for public, live Reels
- The same link works when you try it a few minutes later
- The issue resolves itself without you changing anything
If you’re using a VPN, try disabling it temporarily. Instagram often restricts content access from VPN IP addresses, which can affect how downloader tools retrieve files.
If you’re not using a VPN and still seeing this error, wait 5–10 minutes and try again. The issue is usually transient.
Fix 8: The File You Got Is a .webp or Image Instead of Video
This happens when you accidentally paste the link to a photo post instead of a Reel. Photo post URLs look like: https://www.instagram.com/p/XXXXXXXXXX/ — similar to Reel URLs but without the /reel/ path.
Downloading a photo post returns an image file (usually .jpg or .webp), not a video.
Fix: Make sure you’re starting from a Reel — a video with the play button icon in the Instagram feed, not a static image. Use the ⋯ → “Copy Link” method from within the Reel player.
Fix 9: Mobile Browser Is Downloading to an Unexpected Location
On mobile, the file may actually be downloading successfully — you just can’t find it.
On Android: Downloads typically go to the Downloads folder, which may not automatically appear in your Gallery. Open your Files app → Downloads folder to find the .mp4 file. You may need to manually move it to your Gallery.
On iPhone (Chrome): Chrome on iOS doesn’t support direct downloads the same way Safari does. If you’re using Chrome and not getting a “Save to Photos” option, switch to Safari.
On iPhone (Safari): Long-press the video in the preview player. If you see “Download Linked File” instead of “Save Video”, the file saves to the Files app (not Photos). Go to Files → Downloads → move the file to Photos manually.
When Nothing Works
If you’ve tried all the above and still can’t download a specific Reel, here are the remaining options:
Screen recording: Not ideal for quality, but it works for any public content you can see on your screen. See our guide to screen recording methods for device-specific steps.
Check the Reel is still live: Open the Reel directly on Instagram. If it loads normally, the content exists. If Instagram shows an error, the Reel may have been deleted, the account may have gone private, or the content may have been restricted in your region.
Try a different link format: Some tools work better with https://www.instagram.com/reel/XXXXXXXXXX/ while others prefer the shortened form. Copy the link again using the in-app “Copy Link” feature.
Summary of Common Errors and Their Causes
| Error | Most Likely Cause |
|---|---|
| “Invalid link” or “Enter a valid URL” | Wrong URL format — not a Reel link |
| “Content not available” | Private account or deleted Reel |
| Tool loads but nothing downloads | Browser extension blocking it; try incognito mode |
| File is a .jpg/.webp not .mp4 | You pasted a photo post link, not a Reel |
| Download saves but file won’t play | Incomplete download; try again on stable connection |
| Same error on multiple Reels | Temporary Instagram rate limit; wait and retry |
| Works on desktop but not mobile | Browser-specific issue; switch from Chrome to Safari on iPhone |
Most download errors are solvable in under 2 minutes once you know what to look for. The most common issue — by far — is pasting the wrong type of link.
Try ReelClick with the correct Reel URL and you’ll have your file in a few seconds.
