Instagram has no built-in option to save a Reel directly to your computer. You can download Reels to your phone in some cases, but that only saves to your camera roll — not to your laptop or desktop as a proper video file.
If you want a Reel saved on your PC or Mac, a browser-based downloader is the cleanest route. No software to install, no account to create, and the video saves in its original quality. Below are separate walkthroughs for Windows and Mac, plus fixes for the issues that come up most often.
What You Need Before You Start
Two things determine whether a download will work:
A public Instagram account. Private accounts block outside access entirely. If you can’t view the Reel without logging in, a downloader can’t reach it either.
The Reel’s link. You’ll copy this directly from Instagram. Each step below shows exactly where to find it.
That’s it. No browser extension, no special software, no Instagram login required.
How to Download Instagram Reels on Windows
These steps work on Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Brave — any modern browser on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Step 1: Copy the Reel Link from Instagram
Open Instagram in your browser at instagram.com. Find the Reel you want to save.
Click the three-dot menu (⋯) in the bottom-right corner of the Reel. From the menu that appears, select Copy Link. The URL is now in your clipboard.
If the Reel is already open in its own browser tab, you can skip the menu entirely — press Ctrl + L to highlight the address bar, then Ctrl + C to copy the URL directly.
Step 2: Paste the Link into ReelClick
Open a new tab and go to ReelClick’s Instagram Reels Downloader. Click inside the input box and paste the link using Ctrl + V. Then click the Download button.
The tool pulls the Reel file from Instagram’s servers. It typically takes two to five seconds.
Step 3: Save the File to Your Computer
When the result loads, click the download button. Your browser will either save the file automatically to your Downloads folder, or pop up a Save As dialog so you can pick where it goes.
If the video opens in a new browser tab and plays instead of downloading, right-click on the video and select Save video as… — this forces the file to save to your drive rather than stream.
Your downloaded Reel saves as an .mp4, which plays in Windows Media Player, VLC, or any standard video app on Windows.
How to Download Instagram Reels on Mac
Mac users follow the same core steps. The only real differences are the keyboard shortcuts and where Safari puts the file.
Step 1: Get the Reel Link
Open instagram.com in any browser and find the Reel you want. Click the three-dot menu (⋯) and select Copy Link.
With the Reel open in a browser tab, you can also press ⌘ + L to select the address bar, then ⌘ + C to copy the link.
Step 2: Use ReelClick to Download
Open ReelClick.online in a new tab. Click the input field, paste your link with ⌘ + V, and click Download.
Step 3: Find Your Downloaded File
Safari saves files to your Downloads folder by default and shows a small download indicator in the top-right corner of the browser window. Click it to open the file directly.
Chrome and Firefox either show a download bar at the bottom or auto-save based on your browser settings.
If the video opens as a stream in a tab instead of saving, right-click it — or hold Control and click on a trackpad — and choose Save video as… to save it manually.
Downloading on a Chromebook
Chromebooks work without any extra steps. Open instagram.com in Chrome, copy the Reel link, paste it into ReelClick, and click Download. The file saves to your Chromebook’s Files > Downloads folder and plays directly in Chrome or the Files app.

Can’t find it? Every browser has a download history you can pull up with a shortcut:
- Chrome: Press Ctrl + J (Windows) or ⌘ + Shift + J (Mac)
- Firefox: Press Ctrl + Shift + Y (Windows) or ⌘ + Shift + Y (Mac)
- Edge: Press Ctrl + J on Windows
- Safari: Press ⌘ + Option + L
What to Do If the Download Isn’t Working
Nothing happens when you click the download button. Try right-clicking the download button and choosing “Save link as…” instead of left-clicking. Some browsers block automatic download triggers from external sites, but this bypasses it.
The video plays in the browser tab instead of saving. Right-click anywhere on the playing video and select “Save video as…” — this captures the raw .mp4 file rather than just streaming it.
The link isn’t being accepted.
Make sure you copied the full Instagram URL. It should look like:

If the link looks incomplete, open the Reel directly in a browser tab and copy the URL from the address bar rather than using Instagram’s in-app “Copy Link” option. The two are usually identical, but the address bar version is more reliable.
You see an error saying the content isn’t available. The Reel was deleted, or the account was switched to private after you first viewed it. There’s no workaround — the content has to be publicly accessible at the time of download.
The downloaded video quality looks lower than expected. The quality reflects what was originally uploaded to Instagram. The downloader retrieves exactly what Instagram has stored — typically 1080p for Reels uploaded at full resolution — without degrading it further. If the original upload was compressed or low-res, the downloaded file will match that.
Video Quality and File Format
Downloaded Reels save as .mp4 files at the original resolution, usually 720p or 1080p depending on how the creator uploaded the video. Instagram compresses videos slightly on upload, so the downloaded file is an exact copy of what Instagram has stored — not higher quality than the original, but not reduced further by the download process either.
VLC, Windows Media Player, QuickTime — the .mp4 works in all of them without installing anything extra.
Private Accounts and Copyright
Private accounts: No browser-based tool can access private Instagram content, even if you follow the account. This is an Instagram restriction, not a limitation of the downloader.
What’s acceptable: Downloading a public Reel to watch offline is no different from saving a webpage — it’s personal use. Where it gets problematic is re-uploading someone else’s video as your own, dropping it into a commercial project, or sharing it widely without the creator’s permission. Watch it offline, fine. Post it as yours, not fine.
Downloading Other Instagram Content on PC
